LATEST WINTER WEATHER PREDICTIONS, OCTOBER 2010
Although the weather in the Alps is very unpredictable, there are those who track the air masses and have made the following predictions for the coming winter season.
These are general predictions and not in depth but will give a feel for the coming winter sports season.
October
Unsettled periods with warm gentle winds from the south or west, bringing mild spells of lovely sunshine and rain to lower mountains but snow to the higher mountains.
November
Under the influence of a Northwest current, there will be weak unsettled periods bringing light snow to lower altitudes. However the cold air will also bring bright sunny days.
December
The Atlantic pressure system fed by cold air will bring dry, cold, sunny weather to the mountains whilst the valleys remain under low cloud.
January
Much the same as December but periods of snowfall to all altitudes of the mountain, cold air stream from the east.
February
Cold and sunny, some snowfall days, but as the sun rises in the sky it will be warmer on the southern lower slopes.
March
Late snowfalls to mid and upper mountains. Spring on the lower slopes!
